A Case Study in Success

The Freedom to Live Our Lives How We Want

After completing his final year of medical school, Greg and Laurie decided to establish their own business. However, they had dreams of something bigger than themselves: “The real appeal of being Independent Business Owners was the opportunity it offered for freedom—a life on our terms, rather than one dictated by unbending schedules and impersonal routines.” They were determined to make their dreams a reality. In Laurie's words, "people are so preoccupied with getting a living that they don't have time to make a life."

Greg considered his life objectives: "We were seeking for a means to live a really free and independent lifestyle." The time of a doctor is never his own. If I had chosen medicine, I would have envisaged myself working up to 100 hours per week only to get out of debt, only to pass away from stress and weariness at the end of it.”

There are no regrets.

Despite significant peer pressure and the reservations of many close friends, the Duncans made the decision to leave the pressures of medicine for the challenges of starting their own firm. Greg and Laurie had achieved financial independence three years after quitting the medical profession, and after six years, they had become Double Diamonds with no regrets: "Today, one of the greatest thrills for us is to witness so many others achieve their goals and ambitions," Greg says. It has allowed us to make a greater impact on more people in more meaningful ways than we ever could have done in a fast-paced medical practise.”

Montana, where I grew up.

The family of four relocated from the Seattle area to their home state of Montana several years ago. A isolated lake with rising fish and eagles soaring in the distance surrounds their rustic alpine house, Dayspring Lodge, which is situated on the southern shore of the lake. Thousands of tamarack and birch trees sway in the breeze as Greg and Laurie take in the breathtaking view from a ski slope on one of the several surrounding mountain ranges, which they have just discovered.

Taking pleasure in life and family

The ability to spend quality time with family is the most highly cherished. We have a son and a daughter who have the opportunity to grow up knowing both their father and their mother, according to Laurie. In Greg's words, "our business allows us to define our lives in terms of our family rather than our money."

Routes to Higher Education

The addition of two full-time private teachers enabled the family to pursue educational opportunities that were both thrilling and unique for them. It was located in one of their several lake properties and was known as "Dayspring Academy." All of the fundamental subjects were covered, however the manner through which they were taught were different from the norm.

One spring, I spent five weeks learning Spanish in a Costa Rican language immersion school. The next spring, I spent five weeks in a French language immersion course at several sites throughout France. In addition to clambering through an ancient Roman aqueduct, the journey included viewing a super-yacht show in Nice, ascents of the peaks surrounding Mont Blanc in the French Alps, and attendance at the opening of the World's Fair in Lisbon, Portugal.

A realistic re-enactment of Custer's Last Stand at the actual historic site on the Little Bighorn River helped them to have a better knowledge of American frontier history. Devin and Whitney's study of Shakespeare was enriched by their family's annual trip to a Shakespeare festival in Oregon, which they attended with their teachers.

When the classroom travelled between Boston, Virginia, Washington, D.C., London, Paris, and a slew of other exciting locations, history and geography were brought to life. Devin and Whitney are incorporating internships and international immersion programmes into their university experience today, demonstrating that real-world application of learning is still possible.

Having the ability to be free and fulfilled

The Duncans agree that they have a wonderful existence. “We are confident that anyone may find the same sense of freedom and pleasure that we have discovered through this business. If you keep your eyes on the prize, this business is a truly amazing opportunity. There is no other business that provides such a tolerant environment. It is impossible to achieve success in any undertaking unless one is willing to fail numerous times first. We are obviously not without flaws, but we have never given up. If you are determined to succeed in this industry, it is just a matter of time before you achieve success.”

Brad and Julie Duncan, of Chattaroy, WA, are Crowns and members of the North American Founders Council. Brad joined Amway in 1981 and married Julie in 1986, before qualifying for Emerald. Emerald in 1986, Diamond in 1989, Executive Diamond in 1991, Double Diamond in 1996, Triple Diamond in 1998, Founders Triple Diamond in 2002, and Crown in 2008 were the qualifications. Brad served on the IBOAI Board of Directors in 2008.

Greg and Dru are Brad's two brothers. Brad's sponsor is Greg Duncan, who is presently a Triple Diamond. Dru is their parent's business's downline.

Success

Brad Duncan's foray into self-employment happened by chance. Brad, a competitive downhill ski racer, broke his leg in a fall during a race. He says, "Any career dreams I had of being a champion were gone." Brad happily accepted his brother Greg's invitation to move to Seattle now that he had finished skiing. Greg, a medical student at the time, revealed the business possibility with Brad as soon as he walked in the door. “I was ecstatic. We remained up all night discussing about how to achieve financial independence as a couple! ” Brad recalls. They did exactly what they said they were going to do.

As he learned more about the company, Brad realised it was exactly what he was looking for. Brad, who was an entrepreneur in high school and college, realised early on that “to be truly successful, I couldn't be satisfied with a job or profession just because I liked it,” but that he needed to find something that gave him the results he desired: financial control and time to spend with his family.

Determination & Persistence

Brad took a construction job six days a week for nine hours a day and worked on his own business at night, sleeping on the floor since he was too busy and broke to buy furniture. His perseverance and effort were rewarded. Brad developed a profitable Ruby business after a year of steady effort and was able to retire, never having to work for another man again. “I was making $1,000 a month working in construction when I was twenty-three years old, and after fourteen months in the industry, I was making more. I had to leave construction because I couldn't afford to work there any longer! “I'm happy,” Brad says comfortably.

Selecting a Winner

Brad and Julie met when Brad was studying for his Emerald certification. At the first meeting she attended, Brad demonstrated the plan. Julie was hired by a client who was pleased by her hard work managing a restaurant chain when she was fresh out of college and working in sales. Julie recalls, "I was twenty-three and already making good money." “It was the opportunity to work with amazing individuals that drew me to this industry. I was a depressed single. I was tired of working seventy hours a week, especially nights and weekends, and of living in that status world's hollow, lonely lifestyle.” It didn't take long for Brad and Julie to realise they had each found a winner. They got married less than a year later.

Several Benefits

Since then, their company has grown to new heights and continues to expand over the globe. Brad and Julie now live a lifestyle that they could never have had if they had worked in construction or in restaurant management. They've reaped many benefits from the company, including fancy cars and the satisfaction of owning magnificent residences. A world-class lake property and lodge in Northern Idaho, as well as a stunning 4,300 square foot redecorated home for Julie's mother in Spokane, are among their properties.

Their 112-acre estate in Eastern Washington contains a 10,000-square-foot mansion. Julie exclaims, "We have immensely enjoyed repairs on our home and the construction of an 18,000-square-foot 'toy shed.'" A three-bedroom guest house, a state-of-the-art exercise/weight room, a 2,400-square-foot classroom for their children, a bunk room with a full-sized kitchen, living room, bathroom, and three three-high-stacked queen, lodgepole pine bunk beds, a video/arcade centre, and parking for over thirty vehicles are all included in the new building.

Location, Location, Location

We are ecstatic about our new home. We're closer to our extended family, which allows us to continue to share many of the blessings we've received with our company's leaders and achievers. Our wish is for everyone to recognise that their ambitions may come true and that they can accomplish even more than Brad and I have.”

Without the Tent, Camping

Traveling to a variety of exotic locations has also been a dream come true. Thailand, Greece, New Zealand, Africa, Mexico, the Caribbean, Hawaii, London, and Paris, France are just a handful of the amazing destinations they've visited: "Travel in our profession is very different than what we were used to." Luxury transportation and enormous, roomy suites in five-star hotels with private employees to fulfil our every need have replaced living out of a camper or sharing a small room with multiple family members! ” Julie exclaims ecstatically. “We spend more than four months of the year on a beach somewhere in the world, spending time with family and friends.”

It's Past Time

Working with a personal fitness trainer in the seclusion of their own athletic facility, having domestic staff assist with property management, and providing their children with the best educational choices available are all common occurrences. The most significant aspect is their personal time freedom, which they may use to spend with one other and their children.

Time and experiences are shared.

Brad and Julie credit their success to their upline's outstanding support and training, as well as being a team player within the World Wide Group support network. “Having a continuous work habit, a desire to put the needs of others first, and recognising from where all of the gifts come are crucial elements in our storey,” Brad says, citing his sponsors, Greg and Laurie Duncan. “Our actual satisfaction comes from assisting people in realising their aspirations and goals of financial independence, as well as enjoying time and experiences with both of our families, who are highly successful in the business.”

The Duncans are champions in life, even if Brad will never receive the laurels of a ski champion. Hopes do come true, and the fulfilling of Brad and Julie's dreams has only just begun.
