Ingold, Nathalie & Werner Amway

Werner Ingold

Werner Ingold (20 February 1919-24 June 1995) was a Swiss chemist and businessman. He was a pioneer in chemical microanalysis, particularly in developing glass-based, highly resistive pH electrodes. He founded Dr. W. Ingold AG in 1948, producing and selling sensors for process analytical applications. He expanded the company into a mid-size international organisation and sold it to Ciba Geigy in 1986. Werner Ingold became a member of the New York Academy of Sciences in 1966.
Ingold, Nathalie & Werner

Early life and education

Werner Ingold was born on 20 February 1919 in Lüterkofen, in the rural district of Solothurn, Switzerland. On his father's farm he was the youngest of three boys of Hans and Ida Ingold (born Santschi). Werner attended primary and district school in neighbouring Hessigkofen hamlet and grammar school at Kantonsschule Solothurn.

Academic career

Between 1938 and 1942, Werner Ingold studied chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich with his thesis "On the Constitution of Naphtaline-Yellow" under Hans Eduard Fierz. He later received a PhD in organic triterpene chemistry microanalysis at the Institute of Organic Technology under Leopold Ružička, obtaining his PhD in 1945 with the thesis "On Understanding Oleanolacid, Glycyrrhetinacid and Boswellinacid."  After his dissertation, he remained at ETH's Institute of Organic Technology, financed by a stipend from the Young Academics Promotion Foundation, and continued his research on organic microanalysis.

In his postgraduate studies, Werner Ingold employed glass electrodes to titrate organic molecules.

Glass electrodes were already known at that time for detecting acidity (pH). (Fritz Haber and Zygmunt Klemensievicz (1909), Dungan Macinnes and Malcom Dole developed pH-sensitive glass electrodes at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York). However, these electrodes' tips were quite fragile. The inventors calculated membrane wall thickness below 0.001 mm. Moreover, these electrodes were mainly unavailable in Europe during World War II and had to be produced in chemical laboratories. During this time, Werner Ingold developed a deep knowledge of glass and its manufacture, enabling him to manufacture more robust pH electrodes ideal for laboratory and industrial uses. Werner Ingold was dedicated to developing and improving glasses for pH measuring until his company's sale.

Company foundation and development

Werner Ingold began producing glass electrodes for pH measurement in 1948, initially as a one-man company operating at Zurich's Huttenstrasse 24. Before devoting himself entirely to marketing pH electrodes, the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) Plastics Division contacted him to establish a micro-analytical laboratory in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK .

From 1950, Ingold advanced the production of pH sensors in Zurich. The first employees joined the company in 1952 and founded Dr. W. Ingold GmbH in Frankfurt, Germany the same year (converted into Dr. W. Ingold KG in 1960). He converted Zurich's sole ownership into a stock corporation, Dr. W. Ingold AG, in 1954

In the early 1950s, the invention of a single-rod measuring cell, a combination of measurement and reference electrode in one construction unit, marked a decisive step towards becoming one of the world's leading companies in the field of pH measurement. Ingold recognised early on the demand for high-quality and robust pH electrodes in the biotech industry – for example, for the production of penicil. The brands Argenthal (high-temperature, high-pressure applications), EQUITHAL (temperature differential compensation) and Xerolyt (without pressure compensation) were launched. Robust pH electrodes were also employed in the chemical sector, developing and marketing micro, piercing and surface electrodes for food applications.

By 1955, the company developed fittings to introduce sensors into tank and piping systems, enabling in-line sensor use for industrial applications. In the 1970s and 1980s, sensors for measuring liquefied oxygen and carbon dioxide as well as ion-selective electrodes (such as ammonium and nitrate) were developed using glass electrode technology. To complete the product range, third-party measurement electronics were also sold.

Zurich's production site moved several times (in 1956 from Huttenstrasse 24 to Pfluggasse 6 and in 1961 to Scheuchzerstrasse 71). Finally, in 1974, the company built and moved to its own production site in Urdorf near Zurich. In 1966, Werner Ingold founded the joint venture Ingold Electrode Inc. in Andover, Massachusetts (USA) for the production and distribution of sensors in North America. The Ingold Technique sales and service branch opened in Paris in 1970, and Ingold Industria e Commercio Ltda in 1978. Facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil .

As Head of Technology, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Board, Werner Ingold was responsible for product innovation and the development of the group's expanding portfolio, Dr. René Baumann, as Head of Sales, Member of the Board of Directors and Member of the Executive Board, was responsible for commercial development and sales network building. The Board of Directors was completed by Dr. Hans Huessy.By the mid-1980s, the group of companies employed approximately 200 professionals and supplied customers in 44 countries.

In 1986, Ingold sold the company to Mettler Instruments AG, who at that time was owned by Ciba Geigy. Today (2019), PO Ingold is a still prosperous business unit of Mettler-Toledo International.

    Guatemala

     Guatemala City

The world leader who most often spoke to Vice President Kamala Harris about U.S. immigration policy sees her as a straight-talking, detail-oriented leader paying close attention to the long-standing reasons people leave his nation.
Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, who is scheduled to host Harris here on Monday during her first international visit as Vice President, also says that the change of administration in Washington was exploited by human traffickers, known as "coyotes," who flew thousands of children to the U.S.-Mexico border within days of President Biden formally rescinding the Trump-era family separation poles. Giammattei wants American lawmakers toughen federal laws against traffickers, and is willing to extradite them for prosecution.
Harris, he added, is open to the concept and is also likely to reveal measures to collaborate with Guatemalan officials to prosecute drug traffickers and other international crimes. The White House wouldn't comment on those apparent intentions before the Vice President's trip on Friday.

     Guatemala CityImmigration

CityImmigrationGuatemala During a bilingual interview with CBS News at the presidential mansion on Friday, he was asked if Guatemalans are abandoning their country now that Mr. Biden is president and Donald Trump is out of office.

He claimed the change in government led to a shift in message: "The message changed to, 'We're going to reunite families and we're going to reunite kids.'"

"The very next day, the coyotes here were establishing children's organisations to transport them to the United States."

"We asked the U.S. government to convey a clear message to prevent other people from fleeing," Giammattei said.

"The very next day, the coyotes here were establishing children's organisations to transport them to the United States.

"We asked the U.S. government to convey a clear message to prevent other people from fleeing," Giammattei said.

But U.S. and Central American leaders agree that other issues are also at stake. Two severe hurricanes devastated Guatemala last year, and climate change continues to bleed other regions of the country dry, making once-fertile soil unfit for families hoping to cultivate commodities to feed or sell and export. Illegal drug trafficking continues to flourish in the region, and domestic violence is a frequent push for women and children. Moreover, the COVID-19 epidemic made unstable economies more vulnerable.

"Most people stay in Guatemala. They want to be at home. They don't desire an extremely expensive vacation to the U.S. They try to relocate inside in the country, seeking jobs, "Mary McInerney, Children Save Country Director, told CBS News.

McInerney noted that a domestic travel ban to curb the spread of the virus has made it difficult for poor rural farm workers to travel from the northern highlands to the Pacific coast to help harvest sugar cane or to help harvest the nation's most lucrative coffee fields.

"More than anything, it's fundamentals, not food," she remarked. "I'd travel anywhere I had to go as a mother to make sure my kids had food to eat."

Giammattei described himself as "frustrated" by the sights of thousands of unaccompanied youngsters being detained after crossing the southern border at U.S. facilities. But he left his way to detail how his government, in charge since January 2019, has redoubled efforts to work with American authorities to curb the influx.

He highlighted several times that the biggest reason his compatriots chose to emigrate is lack of economic opportunity. That distinguishes his country from neighbouring El Salvador and Honduras, where he claimed violence, fuelled by illegal drug trafficking, is a main push factor.

As for discrepancies with Harris about how to respond to the causes of the immigration crisis, Giammattei stressed that they are fundamental, not personal. When discussing what he believes is a mistaken focus on government corruption, he became very passionate. In recent weeks, Harris has visited with former Guatemalan prosecutors and judges dismissed from office or not reappointed by the national assembly. Giammattei and his political allies have questioned some of those previous judicial officials' political leanings and the effectiveness of their function, but their dismissal comes with other threats to judicial independence around Latin America, notably El Salvador.

But Giammattei believes corruption affects all parts of society, including corporate and non-governmental organisations, whose leaders he said earn heavy wages.

"Who's the biggest corrupter on corruption? There's someone else more corrupt than a government like ours, "He's claimed. "Traffickers Narco."

For years, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been referred to as the Northern Triangle, a triumvirate of Central America's western portion. In the past, some regional leaders have tried using the divide to negotiate regional trade or security accords.

But in the interview, Giammattei branded the word "an insult" and is actively seeking distance between his country and his two eastern neighbours as political events deteriorate. El Salvador is governed by Nayib Bukele, an outspoken leader who actively consolidates power, attacks critics through social media, including American congressmen, and has a hot-and-cold relationship with Biden administration officials. Honduras is led by Juan Orlando Hernández, whose brother was convicted to life imprisonment in U.S. drug trafficking charges in March.

Privately, Biden administration officials admit that, given the region's political instability, Guatemala is the worst option for an immigration partner. Giammattei seems satisfied the primary partner.

"There's a mistake in the United States. They looked at us like their garden. That's the error. We're the front-yard, "He's said. "And if the front yard is awful, how's the house? If you're all looking after your front yard, how's your house?"

Asked if he had discussed his concerns with Harris about the Northern Triangle distinction, he responded on Monday.

Fin Gómez, Alex Pena and Tim Perry contributed.

Guatemala City (Spanish: Ciudad de Guatemala), popularly known as Guatemala or Guate, officially Ciudad de Guatemala (art. 231 of the Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala),[5] is the capital and largest city of Guatemala,[6] and the most populous urban region in Central America. The city is located in the south-central portion of the country, hidden in a mountain valley named Valle de la Ermita (English: Hermitage Valley) (English: Hermitage Valley). It is estimated that its population is roughly 1 million. Guatemala City is also the capital of the Municipality of Guatemala and of the Guatemala Department.
Guatemala City is the site of the Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu, established in 1500 BC.
[citation needed] Following the Spanish invasion, a new town was established, and in 1776 it was designated capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. In 1821, Guatemala City was the location of the proclamation of independence of Central America from Spain, following which it became the capital of the newly founded United Provinces of Central America (later the Federal Republic of Central America) (later the Federal Republic of Central America). [citation needed] In 1847, Guatemala declared itself an independent republic, with Guatemala City as its capital. The city was initially located in what is now Antigua Guatemala, and was transferred to its current position in 1777. [7] Guatemala City and the original location in Antigua Guatemala were nearly completely devastated by the 1917–18 earthquakes. Reconstructions following the earthquakes have resulted in a more modern architectural landscape. [citation needed]

Today, Guatemala City is the political, cultural, and economic heart of Guatemala. It is served by La Aurora International Airport.

      Dobler, Cornelia Amway

       Cornelia Klier

Cornelia Klier (née Bügel) is a German rower who was born in Leutenberg on March 19, 1957. [1, 2] She married in 1980, just before the Olympic Games, and in Moscow, she went by her marital name.
      Dobler, Cornelia

      Cornelia

Cornelia was the second daughter of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the hero of the Second Punic War, and Aemilia Paulla. While drawing similarities to paradigmatic instances of virtuous Roman women like Lucretia, Cornelia distinguishes herself from the rest because of her interest in literature, writing, and investing in her sons' political aspirations. She was Gracchi's mother, and Scipio Aemilianus' mother-in-law.

      Biography

Cornelia married Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus' grandson, at an early age. The union proved to be a happy one, and together they had 12 children, a highly exceptional Roman standard. Six were boys, six were girls.

Only three are known to have survived childhood: Sempronia, who married her cousin Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus, and the two Gracchi brothers (Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus), who would defy Rome's political institutions by attempting popular changes.

She elected to stay a widow after her husband's death while still enjoying a princess-like status and set to educate her children. She even denied King Ptolemy VIII Physcon's marriage request since she became a chaste and dutiful wife after her only husband died. However, her reluctance could easily be explained by her desire for more independence and freedom in the way her children were raised.

Cornelia afterwards studied literature, Latin, and Greek. Cornelia took advantage of the Greek professors she brought to Rome, particularly the philosophers Blossius (from Cumae) and Diophanes (from Mytilene) to educate young men. She had been taught the necessity of acquiring an education and came to take an intensive role in the education of her boys during the "bygone republican era," creating a "superior Roman political leader race."

Cornelia constantly supported her sons Tiberius and Gaius, even when they angered the orthodox patrician households she was born into. According to Valerius Maximus, she took joy in them, comparing her children to "jewels" and other wonderful things.

After her violent death, she retired from Rome to a Misenum villa, but continued to welcome guests. Her home saw many knowledgeable men, especially Greek scholars, who travelled from all over the Roman world to freely read and discuss their ideas.

Rome worshipped her qualities, and when she died in advanced age, the populace voted in her honour for a statue.

       Georges Michel (painter)

Georges Michel (12 January 1763 – 7 or 8 June 1843) was a French landscape painter. An significant forerunner of the Barbizon school, Michel was practically unknown during his lifetime, and worked as copyist and restorer.
      Cattin, Katy & Michel

Michel was born in Paris. His father was an employee at Les Halles, a big marketplace in the middle section of the city. Michel's first patron, at a very early age, was a particular Monsieur de Chalue. His initial painting teacher was one Leduc, a history painter, and afterwards Michel trained under Nicolas-Antoine Taunay. Although he showed at the Paris Salon, he failed to obtain fame and earned his living by working as copyist and restorer; he specialised in Dutch paintings and was aided in business by Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Le Brun's spouse.

Most of Michel's work focusses on rural scenes in the area around Paris. He was influenced by Dutch landscape painters such as Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema. Michel worked in oil and watercolour with equal skill. He was neglected for decades after his death; the first significant exhibition of his art was staged by the Parisian Jean Charpentier hotel, in 1927. Today his paintings are found in museums across the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, Vanderbilt University Gallery, Strasbourg Musée des Beaux-Arts, Victoria & Albert Museum, and many others.
