San Francisco-based Okta, Inc. is an authentication and authorization company that is traded on the stock exchange. It provides cloud-based software that assists businesses in managing and securing authentication process into applications, as well as enabling developers to incorporate identity controls into programmes, websites, online services, and hardware. It was created in 2009 and went public in 2017, when it was valued at more than $6 billion in its first public offering.
History
Tod McKinnon and Frederick Kerrest co-founded Okta in 2009 after previously working together at Salesforce.
Only with help of venture capitalists Andreessen Horowitz, Greylock Partners, and Sequoia Capital, the company raised US$75 million in 2015, valuing the company at a total of US$1.2 billion at the time of the round.
Additional US$187 million was raised through Okta's public offering (IPO) in 2017.
It increased in value on its first trading day.
Sequoia Capital was the company's largest shareholder at the time of its initial public offering, with a 21.2 percent interest.
Okta's CEO said in January 2019 that the company had more than 100 million registered users worldwide.
As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, Okta declared in August 2020 that it intends to allow the vast majority of its workers to work from home on a permanent basis going forward.
OKTA announced in March 2021 that it had inked a definitive agreement to purchase Auth0 for $6.5 billion.

Security issues
An Okta office network was compromised on March 9, 2021, by the hacker collective "Advanced Persistent Threat 69420," which took advantage of a security flaw in the company's Verkada camera setup. They were able to obtain security footage from of the cameras and download it. Tillie Kottmann, a member of the gang, also revealed that the group had gained root shell access to the network, according to Tillie. The next day, Okta Chief Security Guard David Bradbury reduced the root shell to the status of a "internal support tool" for the camera manufacturer Verkada, according to a blog post. The shell, on the other hand, would have provided the hackers with complete access to the network, and Cloudflare confessed that a similar hack by the group on that company's network had provided them with that degree of access. Bradbury also stated that the threat had been restricted to a single network of computers.
