Gerd Spier's life tale takes him from the kitchen sink to the stars and back again.
"When Gerd Spier arrived in New York from his home country of Germany in 1963, he was hired as a dishwashing machine operator.
He also worked as a truck driver before relocating to Alaska and eventually enrolling in the University of California, Berkeley, to pursue degrees in mathematics and engineering.
With a bachelor's and master's degree under his belt, he went on to work as an engineer for NASA, where he was involved in missions to Mars.
"I wasn't confident in my ability to be successful in any business, let alone this one," he recalls, "but I didn't want to pass up the opportunity in case it turned out to be a good fit for me."
"Having a steady source of money would allow me to return to school to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics." Patricia grew up in Mexico and went to school for two different careers: tourism administration and secretarial services.
She worked as an executive secretary for a big bank after assisting with the organisation of the 1986 World Cup soccer tournaments in the city.
Of course, the Spier business is thriving in Mexico, and it has expanded to include operations in a number of other countries as well.
"Personal development is a genuine byproduct of our industry," the engineer asserts. "I've discovered that I have the ability to direct my own destiny.
And, of course, enjoy yourself and have a good time."
