Story of Success
- Successful partners
- Don't allow anyone steal your dream, IBO Leaders - FAA 65, The Yager Family
Dexter and Birdie Yager and their children are living proof of what they've always taught others: that everything is possible if you have a dream, a mentor, an optimistic attitude, and the power of knowledge.
Spend some time around a table with Dexter and Birdie Yager, their three sons – Jeff, Doyle, and Steve – and their life partners (Quixtar business partners as well), and you'll learn a whole new meaning to the phrase “family dynamics.” With five distinct and strong personalities all working toward one goal, the Yagers complement and inspire one another as they work together to.
“We're proud to call our guys ‘sons,' and we're proud to call them partners,” Dex exclaims. Dex is and has always been a fighter, having almost entirely recovered from a terrible stomach disease. He confronts every life difficulty with determination and a cheerful attitude, from strokes to his most recent sickness. It's a strategy that clearly works, as Dex's eye sparkles and his voice crackles with excitement, revealing that he's as vibrant and vital as ever. And the love and respect he receives from his family demonstrates that he is every bit the leader and mentor at home that he has always been in the workplace.
Yes, he was loved by his family, but he was not venerated from afar.
At one point during the chat, Dex remarks to Birdie, quizzically, "You're giving me a look."
“You haven't seen my face yet?” Birdie teases her husband, who promptly responds by suggesting she get him a "Birdie Dictionary."
All family members are known for their constant banter and no-holds-barred approach to telling each other how it is – but always with humour, respect, and love. And it appears to be working for them.
“Our boys are a fantastic team, and learning to work as a team is one of the most difficult concepts to grasp,” Dex explains. “However, collaboration has a tremendous amount of strength. Working together always yields better results than working alone, and these guys are aware of this.”
When asked about the single most significant component in their success, Birdie responds emphatically, "Relationships." “It's always been and always will be about relationships. And none are more significant than those we share with our loved ones.”
Jeff, Doyle, and Steve, as Dex and Birdie's partners, are involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. Dex attributes much of the credit for the team's most recent achievement, earning an unprecedented 60 Founders Achievement Awards honours, to his boys' dedication and hard work.
Jeff, who splits his time evenly between working closely with downline Independent Firm Owners (IBOs) as well as general management and financial responsibilities for the family business, says, “We blend pretty well.” He is also a trustee on the board of a prominent Virginia institution. Because the Yagers do a lot of foreign business, keeping in contact with the IBOs in the company necessitates a lot of travel.
Jeff is outgoing and, in appearance and many behaviours, looks a lot like his father. He is dedicated to his family as well as the family company. He enjoys travelling to expand his company, but he always looks forward to seeing his wife, Rhonda, and his five children, Danielle, Jordan, Houston, Logan, and Colton. The family works and plays together, whether it's watching a Carolina Panthers football game in their home cinema, tackling lessons in their huge home-school room, or golfing around their lakeside property in their golf cart. As the kids hustle to get their golf cart camera ready, taunting each other the entire time, it's evident that the entire Yager family has a unique sense of humour and work ethic.
What's Doyle's perspective on Yager teamwork? He jokes, "We're like a basketball squad - just shorter." Doyle spends the majority of his time with IBOs and product marketing, as well as serving as the key product and marketing liaison between the firm and the Corporation. He also serves on the board of the Easter Seals North Carolina chapter, for whom Quixtar is a national sponsor as part of the global One By One project. “We switch jobs to study all aspects of the business, and we can each step into any position that has to be filled, but we each have our own specialties,” says the group.
Doyle is a lot like his mother in terms of being thoughtful and earnest while yet being quick to smile. He enjoys riding his motorbike or sailing with his wife, Holly, their daughter, Brooklyn, and son Aaron when he is not expanding the firm (their other son, Justin, is off at college). The family also enjoys spending time together at home in silence. Holly enjoys cooking, and they enjoy sharing one of her special dinners on a regular basis.
Although every Yager child grew up unloading orders, stacking shelves, and answering phones in the early years of Dex and Birdie's business, Doyle was the first of the three to accept an official role with the company (following daughter April). Today, the majority of the couple's children are involved in the firm at various levels, with Doyle, Steve, and Jeff sharing the partnership with their parents.
The fourth generation of Yagers is already learning from the boys as they take on increased leadership roles. Aaron has already become an IBO, one of the few of the following generation to get involved in the industry. Several months ago, he began aggressively presenting the Plan and selling merchandise, learning the ropes just like any other IBO — including his father and uncles.
Steve says, "It's fantastic to see this business influencing the next generation." “One of the most enjoyable aspects of what we do is introducing the Plan to new people.”
When it comes to business, Steve is all business, but when he's with his family, he's a little more lighthearted. He and his wife, Lorryn, enjoy tormenting each other, and their two small children, Grace and Noah, are constantly joking with them. The family enjoys cruising on their boat or participating in other water sports on the lake where they dwell.
Steve spends the majority of his time dealing with IBOs, managing the North American and foreign training system (meetings, materials, and support), and providing business-wide administrative assistance. Replicating their success in the United States in other countries is a big emphasis for their company today. This necessitates extensive travel as well as an open mind toward other cultures and ideas, as well as a grasp of human nature.
“What divides people the most is not their history, race, education, or age, but the way they think,” Dex writes in his new book, The Pursuit: Success Is Hidden in the Journey.
“This business only works if you sincerely love people and want to help them succeed,” Dex adds, exuding the same enthusiasm that has propelled them to success. “There are many variances among individuals all throughout the world, but the fundamentals stay the same. Everyone wants to win, and as a leader, all you have to do is figure out what's holding each person back and assist them overcome it.”
Life-changing lessons
“Our parents taught us that we are all products of our environment,” Jeff explains. “If someone has had a bad environment, you want to help them decrease it. If it's been positive, you strive to assist them in making the most of it. Dad is a master at spotting and nurturing people's potential so that they believe in themselves. That's what we do as well.”
Doyle mentions the importance of attitude as one of their parents' other lessons. “From a young age, Mom and Dad instilled in us the belief that while you can't always control your circumstances, you can always control your attitude. That is a critical component of success in this field.
