Success Story (Historia de Exito)

For Mario & Adria Ciprian, from the Dominican Republic, “success comes from faith in what you are doing”. Their determined rise to Diamante amidst so many economic and geographic hurdles is a wonderful example that hard work and dedication can make dreams come true… and keep them young. “He was working as an accountant for a large company and teaching at the University when we heard about Amway. And even though he was working 10 to 12 hours a day, we still had a hard time supporting ourselves ”recalls Mario.

At the same time, Adria was working as a cashier in a department store. That was in December 1980. By the following December, Mario and Adria had quit their jobs to focus on building their Amway business. As Mario will tell you, it took them hard work to get to that point and much longer to get to Diamante.

Growth was made more difficult by the obstacles the Ciprián faced trying to build their Amway business in the Dominican Republic. "Placing an order implied getting on a plane, flying to Puerto Rico, changing the currency, picking up the product, going back to the Dominican Republic! Going through Customs!" Mario explains. Despite such obstacles, his business has become one of the largest in the Dominican Republic. “Amway's business becomes even more important because our country is very poor. People see that we can help them, "says Mario. We are living examples of what hard work and dedication can accomplish in this business."

The Ciprián have known hard work since childhood. Mario was born into a “very, very poor” family, in the town of San José de Ocoa. However, his parents managed to save enough to send Mario to college in the hope that his studies would allow him to build a better life for his family: "But that was an illusion," he says. Mario naively.

Adria also comes from a very poor family. Raised in the Peñón Barahona Section, she Adria herself went to rural schools until she was 9 years old, when she said: "I want to go to the city to study in a better school." Her parents agreed. They left by donkey, the only means of transportation available to them. Adria stayed with relatives in town for a few years until her parents were able to catch up with her. “By my parents' example, I learned not to give up, no matter how tough the challenges can be,” she notes.

Mario and Adria often compare their current life with their humble beginnings and Adria says: “When we started this business our house was very small, rather a shack. We now have an office in the city center; also a spacious house, very comfortable, with portals, gardens and space for children and grandchildren, when they visit us.

Her seven children (Mario Emilio, Jr (Victor Emilio, Hannah Sophia-grandchildren), Indira (Mario Jose, Valeri Aleena, Lucas-grandchildren), Joanna, Erick, Cindy, Richard and Mariel).

"His grandchildren love to share with their grandfather, says Adria laughing, those who know him, understand him, because Mario is a very jovial person."
