After several years of teaching and coaching, Frances and Jake began to have doubts about the direction their financial future might take them. The Halter's were unable to find consolation in the fact that they would soon be joining their colleagues in retirement as they rejoiced with their colleagues.
Jake transferred his emphasis to real estate in the hopes of achieving financial independence, while Frances continued to work in the classroom. Because to the market's collapse, the Halter family found themselves surviving on the pay of a single teacher for a while.
"It was a difficult moment for us," Frances recalled. Because of this, when a friend of Jake's called and inquired whether he would be interested in going into business with him, Jake responded without hesitation, "Yes, when do we get started?" Even though the Halters were new to the area, they adopted the motto, "Have car, will travel." After only 18 months in the business, they were earning the same amount of money they had earned as teachers. But, maybe most importantly, they were having a good time. The Emerald and Diamond jackpots were won after four and a half years in the business and all in the same year.
The thought of what our lives would be like if we had stayed in teaching never leaves my mind...For starters, our teachers retirement checks wouldn't even cover our golfing expenses today."
