Overton, Clayton & Charlotte Amway

Overton, Clayton & Charlotte

"The opportunity to Make a Difference."

"Clayton Overton is an orthopaedic surgeon practising in California.

When the cost of his malpractice insurance increased from $7,000 to $25,000 in a single year, he and his wife, Charlotte, began seriously considering the possibility of starting a business.

Both had graduated from Tulane University in Louisiana and would be forced to return to their home states in order to take advantage of the lower insurance rates, unless they could earn more money.

"At the time, we were in the process of building a new home and discovered we couldn't afford it," Clayton recalls.

Despite the fact that many of Charlotte's friends and relatives laughed and thought the firm would fail or that she "couldn't do it," she says she and her husband were determined to make it succeed.

One year later, she was working full-time for them at their firm. The Overtons are now frequently on the road for business.

Clayton enjoys medicine and, as a result of the company's success, he no longer has to work 80-100 hours per week like he used to.

The fact that "he has a minimal patient load while he's in the office," according to Charlotte, "makes it enjoyable."

Clayton accompanied one of his sons to Bhutan for several weeks after he finished from medical school, just before he began his residency.

Clayton volunteered his surgical abilities there. Bhutan, which is high in the Himalayas and has only thirteen doctors, none of whom are orthopaedic surgeons, is a developing country.

Clayton brought equipment with him to the country and left it as a gift to the people there.
