This testimony was discovered on an Amway forum (Well Trained Mind). Scary!
Amway is sold by a significant number of people in my church. People who are genuinely polite and sincere. One of them was a close friend from high school (and her parents are millionaires, in part from Amway, in part from several other business ventures). When I was in college, my parents eventually made the decision to join Amway. In addition to his successful business (which was based in sales), my father wished to establish another business for our benefit as a family. He worked quite hard at Amway, completed all of their requests, and persuaded my mother to begin purchasing all of their things. He began to delegate his other business to others in order to attend Amaway rallies in adjacent states, as this was what was required of him.
When he attempted to pay his hotel bill at one of the rallies, he was told that he had to pay the listed fee. In order to receive a business discount, he provided information about his previous business. He was charged half the amount he had requested when he booked his reservations. The hotel refused, claiming that because he was there on behalf of Amway, the Amway representative in charge would not allow individuals attending the conference to take advantage of the discount. Further investigation revealed to my father via my acquaintance (the daughter of this rally's organiser) that the person in charge of the rally had actually gotten a form of payment from the hotel for holding it there—this was included in his contract with the hotel when he planned the event there. The only option to get a better deal was to stay in a hotel that was not hosting the event itself. To say that my parents were furious and felt betrayed would be an understatement. My father later learned through the leader's son-in-law that the leader made the majority of his fortune by collecting a portion from hotels, selling tapes and books, and other such ventures. For more than a decade, my father had been acquainted with this guy through church, and he challenged him about the high room prices and what he was told by the hotel and others. The leader showed no remorse and even urged my father to continue expanding his lines in the hopes of one day being able to do the same thing.
Needless to say, my parents decided to leave Amway and haven't looked back since.
