"The problem that so many have is that their pricing aren't competitive in the real world," says Lou Abbott, who works in multilevel marketing and manages the industry website MLM-TheWholeTruth.com. "The problem that so many have is that their prices aren't competitive in the real world."
Pat Slaven, programme manager for Consumer Reports, believes that detergent is a good choice. She conducted blind testing of detergents last year, and variants of Amway's Legacy of Clean detergents were placed ninth and 18th, respectively, out of a total of 20 detergents evaluated. According to her, shoppers may "go to the grocery store and acquire something that performs significantly better for significantly lower cost." She also advises consumers to avoid buying them. The highly concentrated Amway brands cost 23 cents and 28 cents a load, respectively, and are quite profitable. Five of the eight recommended brands are less expensive than the others.
Amway's Nutrilite Double X multivitamins are available for $75 for a 31-day supply. The most equivalent product offered by supplement shop GNC, Ultra Mega Green multivitamins, is priced at $40 for a 60-day supply.
"The quality of our products (is) reflected in our pricing," says Steve Lieberman, managing director of Amway North America.
In the opinion of Roland Whitsell, a retired business professor who spent 40 years investigating and teaching the perils of multilevel marketing, it's no surprise that Amway's significant expansion is now occurring outside of the United States. The "direct selling" aspect of multilevel marketing, according to him, is necessary in nations with "poor distribution systems and limited choices in retail establishments," but its potential is "severely constrained" in the United States.
