Bass, Walter Amway

Independent business owners have a selfless advocate on their side.

Rather than anything else, Walter Bass was initially drawn to the direct marketing business endeavour that Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel proposed to him because of the unconstrained opportunities it offered.

While working with the American Way Association, Walter was also a strong advocate for unlimited opportunity, which he did so successfully (AWA).

Walter has been involved in the company for about ten years, long before the AWA was established. He was one of the very first Nutrilite Distributors to be sponsored by Ja-Ri Corporation, and he still works for the company today.

At the time, Ja-Ri consisted of two young men who operated out of the trunk of a car, selling Nutrilite products and pitching a huge idea to customers. Walter recognised the tremendous potential in their concept.

Walter worked closely with Jay and Rich as they grew Ja-Ri Corporation from a small regional company with a few hundred customers to a regional company with thousands of customers.

His early experiences solidified his conviction that unfettered opportunity was the most important factor in the company's success, which he shared with others.

Whenever circumstances threatened that chance, he banded together with Rich, Jay, and the other AWA founding members to write the first Sales and Marketing Plan, which ensured that there would be no restrictions on opportunity.

Walter served as President of the AWA (now known as the Independent Business Owners Association International) for all but one year of the organization's existence, from its creation in 1956 through its dissolution in 1976.

As a result of his leadership, the Association has embraced its charter to act as an advocate for small business owners.

The IBOA International was able to establish the extremely tight working connection with the Corporation in large part as a result of Walter's efforts, which continues to this day.

Awarded the privilege of serving as a founding member of its Presidents Cabinet in 1990, Walter's efforts were recognised by the Association. Walter passed away in 1993.

Walter Bass received his Emerald qualification in July 1985, and his achievement was recognised in the July 1986 Amagram.
