Another Amway Casualty

A reader shares her personal experience:

Our involvement with Amway began around 1995, when my spouse and I first met. We stayed for a few months in the area. I found the products to be prohibitively expensive, and the cleaning products performed no better, and in many cases performed worse, than their lower-priced name-brand competitors that can be purchased at the grocery store. We spent around a thousand dollars on Amway products and went to a large Amway event to celebrate. It had to have been Free Enterprise Days because I recall it being in the fall at the time. The majority of our friends and family had heard of Amway, but none of them were interested in purchasing the products since they were too expensive. Some of my husband's meetings were attended by a younger coworker of his. I believe he may have signed up to be an IBO, but he later relocated to another state and we never heard from him or saw anything about him.

I assumed it was the end of Amway, at least for the time being.

My husband begins to associate with this jerk that he has met. A vendor who comes by his place of business on a regular basis. He's a lot younger than us, maybe around 25 years old. We're in our late 40s at this point. Later, my husband offers me to accompany him and the jerk ass to a coffee meeting at the home of another couple. I reluctantly accept. I'm not really concerned about it, but I'm not particularly eager to go.

I unwittingly fell into an Amway snare. I was caught off guard. My husband has expressed an interest in becoming involved with Amway once more. I am dissatisfied. To make matters worse, he informs me that he has already registered. All of the other people in the room join forces against me, telling me that Amway is a completely different company today than it was 15 years ago. I'm dragged out to a meeting by my friends. They're repeating the same stories I've heard in the past. What exactly is different? Nothing, because none of our friends or family members are interested in purchasing awful Amway products that cost three or four times as much as comparable products at regular prices. We can't seem to find anyone who is interested in attending an Amway meeting.

The thought that my husband would fall for this nonsense again is absurd. After all, we're not a bunch of moron's. I hold a bachelor's degree from a reputable university and have enjoyed a successful professional career. He attended technical school and has been employed by the same company for a number of years. We may not be as wealthy as those Diamonds who appear on stage and boast about their mansions, automobiles, and vacations, but we own our home, drive automobiles that are free of debt, have pleasant holidays, and lead a somewhat comfortable existence.

Until Amway came back into the picture. This time it's a whole lot worse. Amway's employees are really insane. They're downright horrible. They're nefarious. They are the most blatant liars I have ever met in my life. Despite the fact that none of them has any clients or anyone in their downline, they go about bragging about how well business is going. There is a widespread belief among these individuals that by attending weekly Amway meetings, they will become wealthy within 2 to 5 years, with residual income to support them for the rest of their life.
