When I ultimately decided to leave the Amway business, one of my first thoughts was that it had been a horrible idea from the beginning. My thoughts began to wander to the possibility that I could also run the business and earn a few more money, which seemed appealing at the time because I was still young and relatively new to the full-time workforce.
So I soon joined and experienced some early success, including being able to sponsor some of my close friends. The thrill of the developing business gave the impression that everything was going exactly as my friend had planned. That I would present my plans and individuals would join, resulting in the expansion of my company. On the surface, it appeared that I would be unable to miss.
However, after a few months, I began to see flaws in my upline's instruction, despite the fact that I did not communicate my "negative" thoughts to my downline. I noticed our upline telling us to get out of debt, which I thought was sound advise. It was only when we purchased Amway products or received Amway training that they would state that it was acceptable to go into debt. This was an investment in our business. This started to raise red flags in my mind. Later, during a "movers and shakers" conference, I received some instruction on how to miss three mortgage payments without having your property foreclosed in the event that you required money to attend the next big function you were attending. I was beginning to wonder if our leaders were truly interested in our success or if they were only interested in extracting money from our downline.
Later on, in a more intimate setting, an Amway leader instructed us that we might even ask our families to forego a meal in order to purchase another standing order because it might contain the one thing you need to hear in order to catapult your business to the next level of achievement. When I first heard this, I began to really doubt the authenticity of my upline. When my upline urged me to drop my fiance' because I would be able to concentrate more on my career if I did, it was the beginning of the end for me. That was the final straw, and I decided to leave the company. Because I received excellent instruction, I never expressed dissatisfaction and simply forgot about it.
After that, I came across a magazine article that exposed the tools hoax. I ultimately started looking into Amway, and Joecool's blog was established as a result of my investigation. Based on my studies and personal experience, I had come to the conclusion that Amway was a terrible idea and a scam.
