Sucess Story
When I first came to America, I had a lot of hopes; dreams of having a great automobile and a nice house," says Kulin Desai, "but those dreams quickly turned into nightmares."
As a result of his departure from India in 1977, Kulin obtained work as a clerk for a prominent bank in New York.
In the end, he followed the Indian tradition of arranged weddings and married Mina, the daughter of a family friend in Bombay, who was the love of his life.
"We were confident in our ability to get along, and love followed afterwards," adds Kulin. Kulin eventually accomplished his version of the American Dream, rising through the ranks of the bank to the position of Vice President of Data Processing.
Even though this provided him with all of the money he desired, it also left him with no time to appreciate it or spend time with his two children, Kavan and Mona.
He was putting in 80-hour weeks, yet he had limited job stability, and there was little possibility for growth. "I came to a free country only to find myself enslaved by my profession," he laments.
They started their home-based business in 1989, and it has grown since then. It gained in importance to them, and they began to regard it as their ticket to a better life filled with more options and greater power.
Mina and Kulin are now able to live a life that is more familiar for them. "This business promotes the family values we had growing up in India," Mina explains, "where the husband and wife work together and spend quality time with the kids.
" Mina's long-term ambition is to recruit a cook at some point in the future. "Indian cooking requires a significant amount of time," she claims!

The Amway Family: The Triumph of a Family Enterprise, as Told by Desai, Kulin, and Mina Amway
Since the beginning of the multi-level marketing (MLM) industry over sixty years ago, one of the most successful direct selling companies in the world, Amway, has been at the forefront of the industry. Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel established the business in Ada, Michigan, in the United States of America in 1959. Since then, the company has grown its activities to more than one hundred nations and territories all over the world. Even though Amway's success was largely due to the efforts of its two founders, the Desai, Kulin, and Mina families should not be overlooked for the contributions they have made to the company's history.
Kulin and Mina Desai are Amway distributors from the second generation. They took over the family business from Kulin's father, Jitendra Desai, who started the company.
