One of the strategies that Amway leaders use to attract new Independent Business Owners (IBOs) is to speak about the dreams that these individuals have. Many people complain about how hard it is to work and how dreams they had as a child or young adult are suppressed and/or completely forgotten as a result of their employment. They attempt to resurrect some of these dreams in the hopes of persuading prospects that Amway is the only, or the most convenient, or the best means to achieve these goals. It is also their goal to foster the belief that people may choose to be successful in Amway. Because there are so many elements that influence success in Amway that are beyond the direct control of an IBO, no one can simply choose to become successful in Amway any more than they can choose to win the lottery. And, by the way, the chances of becoming diamond and keeping it are almost as unlikely as the chances of winning the lottery are.
What is rather cruel is that it is renewing dreams that, for many, will never come true, no matter how much work is put in or how many tools are consumed in the process. Despite how huge the desire may be, there are numerous occasions in which it will never be realised due to physical and financial limits. For example, many of us had aspirations of becoming professional football, hockey, or basketball players and basking in the glory of victory when we were children. However, no matter how many hours you put in and how hard you work, the vast majority of people will never achieve the status of professional players in any sport. Even among those who go on to become professional athletes, just a small percentage are deemed "elite."
However, Amway recruiters would lead individuals to believe that by simply purchasing a few items and selling a few products, as well as putting in 2-5 years of "hard" effort, they will be able to join the world's affluent elite. Just as if having your home care, beauty, and nutritional items shifted around from one individual to another will help you achieve your goals. That you will quit your employment and spend your time walking the beaches of the world as the money pours in from every direction. Unfortunately, many young individuals are drawn to an offer that allows them to retire sooner rather than waiting until they reach the traditional retirement age of 62 or whatever the usual retirement age is. It amounts to little more than marketing false hopes and promises to the great majority of those who become involved. I feel that persons who are labelled as "dream stealers" may actually be doing their families and friends a service by snatching their dreams, which are unlikely to come true in any event.
Considering that only around one out of every 240 IBOs will reach platinum (the supposed break even mark) and only about one out of every 20,000 IBOs will reach diamond, the dream is a long shot at best. Even for the chosen few who are able to overcome significant obstacles and problems, sustaining their current level is sometimes unachievable and not worth the effort (many diamonds have quit).
Furthermore, if you do achieve success, you will leave a trail of people who were unable to achieve or did not achieve anything near to your degree of achievement. Consequently, in many instances, your success will be at the expense of others you support. It is for this reason that many people believe Amway is a lawful pyramid scheme.
It is beneficial to have dreams and aspirations. But do you really want to achieve your ultimate goal at the expense of individuals who trusted you and decided to be a part of your downline (both financially and emotionally)? Is it your ambition to become a diamond and have 500 to 1000 or more downline IBOs that are all in the red? Is it your ambition to become wealthy by taking advantage of individuals who put their trust in you and feel that they can achieve the same level of success that you have, while in fact the contrary is true?
What do you want to be when you grow up? Are you willing to cause harm to others in order to achieve your goals?
