The most telling sign is whether or not the mystery shopping firm requires you to pay a registration fee. It reminds me of the Amway deception. Never pay a fee for anything.

Our items have included mostly downsizing items, as well as some unusual items (to other people, perhaps!) that we have sold and made a few hundred dollars off of each.
